What is creativity?

Posted on Nov 15th, 2007 by Jen : Zrii-ite Jen
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 15, 2007:

Creativity is making our dreams a reality. I am working of coming up with a program for our school that will teach our young people how to give back.  Instead of calling it community service I think the title should be Giving Back.  Here are a couple of ideas that I have been thinking about, Helping deliver meals to seniors, visiting seniors at there homes or in nursing homes (the ones who don't ever get visitors).  If anyone has other ideas or programs in place let me know please.  So many of our youngsters look at life as what do I get instead of what can I give.  Zig Ziglar says if you help enough other people in life get what they want you will get what you want.

What a great idea!  I went to a high school that integrated community service into the curriculum (in 9th grade, each student started doing 1 hour of community service at the school– tutoring younger kids, stuffing envelopes in an office, etc.– with a quarterly class project with a community organization.  In 11th grade, we started doing community service in smaller teams.   Senior year, each student would commit to an organization where they would do community service for the year.  Every Tuesday, we'd leave school at lunch time and spend the rest of the day working at the organization we'd chosen– it could be anything: an orphanage, reading for the blind, a school in the inner city, etc.).  It was part of a broader goal of the school to foster “social awareness which impels to action” and I think they really did an amazing job in showing us that we can each contribute in some way to our communities no matter how young we are.

Best of luck to you with your project!   Just wanted to share my experience in case it provides any inspiration or insight in your project planning.

Much love,
Yamie

Thank you so much - it helps alot - I can't wait to talk with the other Booster club members about your ideas - The school is willing to work with us and let students out for serving others but I just have to get it all organized.

I do agree. I think more of the students these days (childern between the age of 12-18 or even younger) should start to learn to give back and help others. Alot of kids are handed alot  from there parents, and do not know how great there life really is. If you take a classroom full of students or even less, to a homeless shelter and have  them help out by feeding people and not only give cans of food. They will learn and understand what the world really is, and how it works. Im going to school to become a teacher myself. The one thing i am going to make my students learn is acts of kindness. The movie/book Pay It Forward is a good example that i am going to base it off of. Best of Luck!!

Sandy
